Launching a rivalry with Easy Goer that would carry through the spring classics into the Breeders’ Cup, Sunday Silence took the first two matches with wins in the Derby and Preakness but Easy Goer foiled his Triple Crown bid in winning the Belmont. The pair again ran one-two in the Breeders’ Cup Classic, with Sunday Silence’s victory wrapping up championship honors. Overlooked by Kentucky breeders, Sunday Silence was sold to Japan, where he led the sires’ list for 13 straight years.
